In one sheer moment, the life of the beautiful heiress would be changed forever. On the eve of her thirteenth birthday, the Sheriff arrived at Landon Manor and revealed to her mother, Vanessa, that Miles Landon had been fatally wounded in a car accident. Always a "daddys girl", Kayla felt that her heart had died that night as well. Her mother would soon resort to constant drinking binges that would make for a turbulent home environment. While she would form a close bond with her Aunt Emily, the obligations of running the corporation kept Emily away from home quite a bit as well. Consequently, Kayla found herself alone and void of the guidance that she needed to direly.

Vanessa would soon leave for France, leaving Kayla whom was now sixteen, with her Aunt Emily. Kayla soon turned her pain and frustration into art as she flared a passion for Design. At eighteen, she went to a Design School and would later return to town to work with Rafael Montoya on his Ferocia Fashions line. It was here that she would meet Rick Preston, a dashing young Lawyer who instantly swept her off her feet.

Afraid to reveal that she was an heiress of such fortune, she kept her identity secret for as long as she could. However, soon such would prove to blow up in their faces when they learned that the Preston and Landon families had an ensuing bitter feud. The climactic hurdle in their relationship came when they discovered checks had continuously been written into the Miles Landon Trust Account years after his Death shockingly from Jonathan Preston himself. Upon further questioning, it was revealed that Jonathan Preston, Ricks father, had been driving the car that had killed Kaylas father, Miles.

Unaware of how to deal with the shocking news, Kayla shut down and isolated herself to Rick's frustration. They eventually came to terms with the fact that they could not change the past, but still they must deal with the pressures laid upon by their respective families to not see each other.

It should also be noted, that unbeknownst to Rick, Kayla has battled social anxiety most of her life. Rooting from the time that fell after her Father's death, Kayla is quite prone to anxiety attacks and often has trouble with the tumultuous spotlight of being an esteemed designer.

In early 2008 it was revealed that Kayla was indeed pregnant after recently tying the knot with Rick. The two purchased a modest new home together but can the home, and more importantly her pregnancy, survive the turbulent quake that ravaged the community?
